A new semester has dawned and with it a new display in the Mackellar Library! Taking inspiration from the Winter Warmers day at the end of last term, students are encouraged to curl up with a good book to match the cold winter days. The library has a bevy of new books on offer. Study guides, ebooks, audiobooks and a range of fiction and non fiction books were purchased shortly before the holidays for the students to enjoy. Congratulations to the 3 lucky winners of the Winter Warmer Library raffle. At the end of last term, students were given a raffle ticket for every book they borrowed from the library. 3 winners were drawn at assembly and received a winners pack which included a copy A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins, a mug, hot chocolate and marshmallows to enjoy during winter. ❄️🔥🐍☕📚 Mrs Reed and Mr Bailey There is a brand new display in the Library! Replacing the Autumn-themed 'Leaf through a Good Book' display from earlier in the term, the display is inspired by Jeannie Baker's Window (1991).
The arrival of term 2 has brought with it a chill in the air and a brand new unbe-leaf-able library display. A big thank you to the students who helped Mr Bailey cut out the tremendous amount of leaves to create the display. The Fiction Room is also home to the 'Check Meowt' display accompanying our Warrior Cat books. Term 2 is also bringing Mackellar's first Harry Potter read/listen-along. All students are welcome to join Miss Reed and Mr Bailey as we dive into Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. An email with details was sent to all students. 🧙🏻♀️🔮🌜🧙🏻🐈 Mrs Reed and Mr Bailey It has been an exciting few weeks here at Mackellar Library! On 8th March we celebrated International Women’s Day. This is a great opportunity for the girls at Mackellar to read up about not only the amazing women who have come before us, but how women are currently paving the way in our society. Books written by and about different women were put on display to encourage our students to borrow. The year 7 GAT project took place across weeks 7 and 8 and saw the students researching issues of equality in contemporary Australia. The students worked hard, guided by some of our great teachers, and created a written report to show what they have learnt during their research. Topics ranged from the gender pay gap, inequality in male and female sport, Aboriginal inequality in the education system, and even to discussing inequality for people with a disability in the education sector and the workplace. The end of week 8 also saw the exciting arrival of a new main desk in the library. The new desk allows for an increase in the space designated for student study. Additionally, the loan limit for ebooks and audio books has increased to 4 books per student for 14 days. Here be dragons! The library currently has a new display that is all things dragons. A range of books focusing on dragons have been put on display for the students to enjoy and borrow. 🐲💪📗📚 Mrs Reed and Mr Bailey The new school year is well under way by now and the library is a buzz with students typing, books being scanned for borrowing and books being discussed in Book Club. 2020 is shaping up to be a busy and productive year at Mackellar and in the Library. Read on to find out some of the events that have already happening in the Library and the events that are upcoming! Year 7 Inductions Year 7 recently finished their inductions into the Mackellar library system. During these induction sessions, students are introduced to the vast array of resources available to them at the library, as well as the electronic systems the library uses. To add a fun element to this, the library staff organised escape boxes for the students to utilise their new library skills. Book Clubs for 2020 The library offers a range of Book Clubs that cater to students in every year group at Mackellar. The Year 7 Book Club is held at lunch on a Thursday and is run by Mr. Bailey. Currently the group is reading Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi. The Year 8/9 Book Club is held on Tuesday during lunch and is run by Miss Mailey. The Year 10/11 Book Club meets every Friday at lunch with Miss Marshall. The senior’s Book Club, run by Miss Reed, also meets on a Friday during lunch. 20 Books for 2020 This year in the library we are seeing with 2020 vision. The 20 books for 2020 Reading Challenge recently began which encourages students to borrow 20 books throughout the year. Students are given a bingo style sheet that they use to select books to borrow and read. The 20 criteria on the sheet include options like, “a book published before 1950”, “an award winning book” and “a book set in another country”. Once the students have selected a book from the sheet, they can cross it out. 📗HSC Lecture Series The HSC lecture series is an initiative by local libraries that sees talks given to year 11 and year 12 students about the different HSC courses. The 2020 series will start in March with a talk for the Extension English 2 course by award winning author Felicity Castagna and a talk for science students by Ruben Meerman, both at the Warringah Mall Library. The events are free, but bookings are essential. A Punlarious Library Joke I was trying to make reservations at the Library. They were completely booked. Library Lovers Day 2020 February 14th saw Mackellar participate in the annual Library Lovers Day, organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). The day is designed to foster a love and appreciation for reading books. Students were encouraged to share the love for their favourite book. Their responses were then incorporated alongside the Library Lovers Day display. 📗📙📘📕 Mrs Reed and Mr Bailey Year 7 Book Club has just started their new project. The students are putting together a website that explores the wonderful world from Lemony Snicket’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” The girls will work on their imagination and creative writing skills by producing summaries of the novels, character personality profiles, fan fiction, quizzes and even games! It is a large project and the end result will be available for the whole school.
Year 8 Book Club is working towards creating a beautiful new Library display. The girls are amassing a collection of their favourite books they wish to share with the rest of the school. Once compiled, they will create a display in the form of a tree, with each leaf containing the title and author of a book. Year 9 Book Club’s most notable project has been to compile a "book" of short stories and poems, including fan fiction, which they wrote themselves over a period of 4-5 weeks. Students have recently completed character studies where they chose their favourite characters from books and wrote blurbs that explained the characters' personalities and added quotes. Continuing for the term, the Year 9 girls will be discussing the endings of books and having a go at rewriting the endings themselves! Here at Mackellar Girls, we are always looking for new ways to incorporate reading into all aspects of life.
We raised $1,400The Book Swap supporting the Indigenous Literacy Foundation was hugely successful this year due to the enthusiasm and support of our wonderful staff and students. The Aboriginal Studies students worked with members of the Book Club to organise and run both the Book Swap and a Cake Stall at recess. Many students donated and swapped books, while others used their baking talents and donated some fabulous cakes.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is great cause that works with young Australians in remote communities. |
