September 7 was our annual celebration of literacy and books. Mackellar loves reading and Book Parade gives us an excuse to come together as a community, dress up as our favourite characters and celebrate all the wonderful opportunities that reading gives us. Students and staff were enthusiastic and appearances were made by a range of literary characters such as Hagrid, Peter Pan, Romeo & Juliet, the Hungry Caterpillar and even the Wicked Witch of the West.

On Wednesday 28th May, the major project showcase for HSC and Preliminary Aboriginal Studies was held in the library. It was a fabulous evening with an impressive turnout of students, parents and community members. It was a great opportunity for the girls to showcase their incredible work and to show their appreciation to those who assisted them with their projects. The girls enthusiasm and hard work has resulted in some outstanding projects that have made their teachers Ms. Griffin, Ms. Saunders and Mr Snow very proud.
The Preliminary projects are still on display and the HSC projects will displayed in the library later this term.
We raised $1225.70!The money was raised for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation at our recent events.....the Book Parade collection and this week's cake stall and book swap! Did you know that there were keen readers waiting outside the library at 8am to rush in and be the first to swap their books? Thanks must go to our Junior and Senior Book Clubs who, with the support of our Aboriginal Studies classes, who did a great job donating books, baking and manning the stalls. Their enthusiasm and altruism are to be commended. Thanks also to all our staff and students who contributed and participated. The Mackellar community has found it inspiring to learn about the important work done by The Indigenous Literacy Foundation to support young Australians living in remote parts of Australia. At the end of last semester the students in 7L, 7A, 7K and 7G produced museum dioramas for their last History assignment on Ancient China. The girls clearly put a great deal of effort and work into their assignments with some fabulous results.
The students worked in teams of three or four to create a museum layout displaying different aspects of Ancient Chinese history and culture. This task allowed the girls to put the skills they had learned throughout the semester into practice. They used their research skills to find sources including artefacts that they would like to see displayed in their museum. They were also required to show source analysis by explaining their selections. The visual aspect of this project gave the students an opportunity to show off their creativity. These are some of the best projects I have seen for this assignment and the bar has been set high for students in 7M, 7C, 7E and 7R who are studying History this semester. |
